Still on Guard · Day 7 of 7
Strong Without Always Being on Guard
God didn't fix my trust issues overnight. He started by letting me feel the weight of my own control.
I pushed myself. Carried everything. Refused to ask. Refused to lean. Until my body broke. I stressed myself to the point of having a stroke.
God didn't cause the stroke. My body reached a breaking point, and in that painful season God met me and showed me I could not keep carrying life alone.
Psalm 23 says, "He makes me to lie down in green pastures." For someone like me, God really did have to make me lie down. He wasn't punishing me. He was protecting me.
For me, rest didn't feel natural. I still have to be intentional. But slowly He was teaching me:
To accept help without feeling ashamed.
To be honest about my limits instead of hiding them.
To let Him be the one in control, instead of me managing every outcome.
For much of my life, I knew how to defend myself. But healing wasn't only learning to defend myself. It was learning to recognize safe connection. I can have boundaries and still have connection. I can use discernment and still love people. And I can be strong without always being on guard.
If you've spent years being the strong one, the alert one, the one who protects everybody else and never lets anybody protect you, hear this: that all came from somewhere real. God's not asking you to be ashamed of it. He's asking you to let Him show you what's safe now.
The things that protected you in an unsafe season can become patterns God lovingly heals in a new season.
Scripture
"The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul."Psalm 23:1–3 (NKJV)
"Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."Matthew 11:28 (NKJV)
Sit With This
Where are you exhausted from trying to hold it all together?
One Small Step
Maybe your first step isn't fixing everything. Name one place where you're tired, and bring it honestly to God: God, I cannot do this on my own. I need You. I need people. I need rest.
A Closing Prayer
God, if someone is still braced for a hit that isn't coming, meet them right there. You already know what formed that reflex. Give us discernment to know the difference between danger and discomfort, between the fight You're calling us to and the fight that's just old injury. We want our guard down in the right places, discernment up in the right places, and Your Spirit running through us in all places. Let what protected us in an unsafe season finally be healed in this new season. We're not finished. But we're not stuck either. Keep building us. In Jesus' name, amen.

You finished seven days. That matters.
God is still building me. And He's still building you.
